Evening Class - IELTS Preparation (2 x 1.5 hrs/wk)

The IELTS Preparation Evening Classes are ideal for anyone who wants to improve their IELTS examination techniques and Academic English skills but needs to fit classes around their busy work or study schedule. Students must be 18 years old.

What is IELTS?

If you are planning to study at a college or university you will be required to demonstrate your English language ability prior to acceptance. The IELTS (International English Language Testing System) qualification is the recognised standard used by academic institutions in the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand and is also accepted in the USA and Canada. The test covers Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing. There are two versions: Academic and General English, with the Academic version being required for entry to college and university courses. As a guide, entry to a university course requires an IELTS score of 6.0 - 7.0 and college courses require IELTS 5.0. See the IELTS website for more information.

When will I study?

The evening classes cover two levels for students targeting either IELTS 5.0 (college entry level) or IELTS 6.5+ (university entry level). There are 2 x 1.5 hour classes each week at each level and the classes run for 12 week periods, each period totals 36 hours of tuition. The levels run on different days as shown below.
Monday & Wednesday18:00-19:30Target = IELTS 6.5+
Tuesday & Thursday18:00-19:30Target = IELTS 5.0
Please note: the availability of each level depends on student demand.

What will I study?

Each class focuses on a different skill (listening, speaking, reading & writing) and incorporates special examination techniques. You will also be expected to complete homework tasks and study outside the class. There are regular feedback sessions so you can discuss with your teacher what you would like to do. There is an end-of-course progress test to assess your improvement. The teachers of this course typically hold IELTS Marker or Examiner status or have similar qualifications and experience appropriate to teach English for Academic Purposes and IELTS Preparation.

What materials will I use?

We use only the latest Textbooks and Audio from major ELT publishers and supplement these with Video, DVD, CD-ROMs, online resources, and authentic materials. Our experienced teachers also create their own materials for classes depending on the students' interests. The teaching materials cost approximately £20 for a 12 week period.

Where can I take the IELTS exam?

The IELTS examination can be taken all over the world. In Scotland, it can be taken at Glasgow University or Basil Paterson college. The exam takes place several times a month but you must apply at least six-weeks before the test date. The present test fee for the IELTS examination is £110 and we can help you with the application process. See Glasgow University webpage for IELTS test dates and fees.
