If you are planning to study at a college or university you will be required to demonstrate your English language ability prior to acceptance. The IELTS (International English Language Testing System) qualification is the recognised standard used by academic institutions in the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand and is also accepted in the USA and Canada. The test covers Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing. There are two versions: Academic and General English, with the Academic version being required for entry to college and university courses. As a guide, entry to a university course requires an IELTS score of 6.0 - 7.0 and college courses require IELTS 5.0. See the IELTS website for more information.
This is a full-time course that combines the general skills needed to live and study in the UK with special exam preparation classes. Each week you will attend for 25 hours: the morning classes (15 hours) focus on language skills; afternoon classes (10 hours) focus on exam skills. The teachers of this course typically hold IELTS Marker or Examiner status or have similar qualifications and experience appropriate to teach English for Academic Purposes and IELTS Preparation.
The IELTS examination can be taken all over the world. In Scotland, it can be taken at Glasgow University or Basil Paterson college. The exam takes place several times a month but you must apply at least six-weeks before the test date. The present test fee for the IELTS examination is £110 and we can help you with the application process. See Glasgow University webpage for IELTS test dates and fees.
Please note this course is only open to students of an intermediate level or above. You can attend the General English & Writing Workshop course until you reach the required level. Also, you must study for a 4 week period, e.g. 4, 8, 12, 16 weeks. Students must be 18 years old.
