For UK visa purposes, the world is divided into 3 areas:
If you are a citizen of any EU or EEA country plus Switzerland you do not require a visa to enter the UK for stays up to 6 months. These countries are listed below.
If you plan to stay longer than 6 months then you must apply for your visa before travelling to the UK.
If you are a citizen of any of the countries listed below you will need a visa to enter the UK. You must obtain your visa before travelling to the UK (this is called pre-entry clearance).
Central African Republic Chad
China (except for Hong Kong and Macao)
Democratic Republic of the Congo
Dominican Republic Ecuador
If you are a citizen of any of the countries listed below you will also need a visa to enter the UK. If you require a Student Visa, or Short Term Student Visitor Visa, you must get it before you leave home. However it is possible to obtain a 6 month Visitor Visa on arrival in the UK.
